(ANSA) - VATICAN CITY, APRIL 10 - Pope Francis has gone out in St. Peter's Square, in the churchyard of the Basilica, from where he presides this morning the mass for the crowd of the faithful on the occasion of Palm Sunday: a scene that was no longer seen in the Berninian oval since the beginning of the pandemic.
The solemn liturgical celebration of Palm Sunday and the Passion of the Lord, on a sunny but very windy Roman morning, is concelebrated with the Pope by 35 cardinals, 30 bishops and 280 priests.
At the beginning, Francis blesses the palm trees and olive trees and, at the end of the procession, he starts the mass, shortening Holy Week.
As per tradition, the square is colored by floral compositions.
Distributed olive branches provided by the National Association of Italian Oil Cities, by the mayors of the cities of
Oil from Lazio and Puglia, by the Caputo family from Taranto.
The supply of fenix palm trees is handled by the Office for Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff.
There are also "palmureli", palm leaves intertwined in an artistic and blessed way, coming from Sanremo.
Furthermore, the Flora Holland nursery company in Rome has made it possible to arrange large olive trees near the statues of Saints Peter and Paul, under the sacrum.
Everything is prepared also because at the end - and this is also a sign of the post-Covid -, weather permitting and after the Angelus recitation always from the Vatican churchyard, the Pope makes a tour of the square among the faithful aboard the 'popemobile', perhaps trespassing also in Piazza Pio XII and at the beginning of Viadella Conciliazione.
