You should avoid the following mistakes:
nutrient deficiency
Heavy, compacted soil and waterlogging
Unsuitable seed mixtures
Too little sunlight
Too low pH
Too deep and/or too rare a cut
The most common reason for moss infestation is a lack of nutrients.
This eventually leads to gaps in the lawn*, which looks unsightly and leaves room for weeds to grow.
Therefore, you should fertilize the lawn regularly.
It is best to choose a fertilizer that contains a lot of potassium.
This makes the grass stronger and more resilient.
At the same time, it should also have a high iron content.
This ensures dense growth, so that the moss has no chance.
As a rule of thumb, it is best to fertilize the lawn twice a year.
At the same time, this ensures that the pH value in the soil does not drop too much.
Because moss grows particularly well on acidic and alkaline soil.
You can determine and monitor the pH value of your soil with a test set from the hardware store or specialist garden store*.

Moss in the lawn: How to proceed correctly in the event of an infestation
If the weeds have already spread like moss, you have no choice but to remove them quickly and completely.
The best way to do this is to pluck out the moss with your hands or an iron rake.
If you don't want to do it directly, you can simply use a scarifier*, which makes cuts in the turf with its blades and thus removes plant residue from the lawn.
At the same time, this aerates the lawn again, which prevents water from collecting in the soil.
Moss loves permanently damp soil and waterlogging, while grass does not.
If you have to overseed the lawn after the winter*, you should make sure that you use seed mixtures that are not too cheap.
The latter often consists of forage grasses from agriculture, which grow high but not wide and can cause holes in the lawn.
This in turn offers plenty of space for moss.
At the same time, the lawn should always get enough light.
After all, weeds like moss thrive particularly well in the shade.
It is also important that you mow the lawn regularly*.
Gardening experts recommend doing this at least once a week from March to November, i.e. during the entire growth phase.
Finally, if the summer is particularly dry, it is advisable to water the area regularly or to purchase a water sprinkler.
