174 deputies voted in favor of him (the required quorum is 172) out of 342. The deputies of Imran Khan's party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), left the hall before the vote after nominating Shah Mahmood Qureshi against ShehbazSharif.

In the government coalition with Shebaz Sharif and his PML-NCI are also the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) of the ex-premier assassinated Benazir Bhutto and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari.

The new government, which aims to govern until the end of the legislature, in October 2023, will now have the difficult task of facing the devastating economic crisis, reforming the electoral law and keeping a heterogeneous coalition together.

Imran Khan, disheartened by parliament, branded the new government as a "US stooge" and called for early elections.
