Whether in yellow, white, orange, purple or red: with their colorful flowers, primroses are the epitome of spring.
However, not all varieties tolerate frost.
Hamburg – In addition to snowdrops, tulips and daffodils, primroses are the typical heralds of spring.
Because as the Latin name ("Primula") of the plant from the primrose family suggests, the pretty flower is number one in the bed in terms of appearance.
But not all varieties of primula are hardy.

According to the Norddeutscher Rundfunk ("NDR"), hardy, perennial species are suitable for planting in the garden.
But not only hobby gardeners benefit from the pretty flowers with the heart-shaped to rounded blossoms: Since they shoot out of the ground so early, they offer many insects such as bumblebees or bees the first valuable food of the year.
The following varieties of primrose* are hardy:
cushion primrose
globe primrose
orchid primrose
Real cowslip
tiered primrose
stem primroses
Cup primroses, potted primroses and bride or lilac primroses, on the other hand, are not very hardy in this country and are therefore extremely popular as houseplants*.
If you still have these varieties on your balcony, if you cover the flowers with fleece in snow and frost, then these varieties also have a good chance of surviving the winter.
Otherwise, potted primroses and cup primroses are pretty and easy-care plants* that feel at home in your home.
However, they should not be placed on a windowsill facing south, as they do not like full sun and grow best at 10 to 15 degrees.

Primroses in April: The perfect location
Primroses should be assigned a location in the garden that is partially shaded with well-drained soil.
With their compact growth, cushion primroses are made for beds, rockeries and containers.
Primroses are very hardy and therefore perennial at the same time, which is why they not only inspire with their 15 centimeter high stems and yellow and orange flowers* from February to May, but also bloom again next year.
They look beautiful in planters and slightly larger pots, but due to their length they are also suitable as a bouquet or simply in a flower vase.
