(ANSA) - ROME, APRIL 11 - "Italy has decided to adhere to the belief in the Blue leaders because it shares their principles and objectives", announces the Minister of Ecological Transition, Roberto Cingolani, speaking of the ambitious alliance of countries in 2019 to to call the international community to take urgent action for the protection of the oceans, in the light of climate change, pollution and overfishing.

"The Mediterranean Sea is one of the largest biodiversity hotspots on the planet and preserving our sea is fundamental. We are committed to protecting 30% of the seas by 2030, not only in a formal way, but with clear indicators", declared the minister on the occasion of the National Sea Day.

Italy thus responds to Belgium's proposal and joins the initiative of which over 17 countries are already part with the aim of establishing, in the context of the Convention on Biodiversity, a new global target on the protection of at least 30% of the oceans by 2030 through a network of "highly and fully" protected areemarines, explains the Mite.

"That of the Blue leaders - continues Mite - is added to the other two major environmental alliances that see Italy already committed to safeguarding terrestrial and marine biodiversity: the Global Ocean Alliance, led by the United Kingdom, and the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People, led by from CostaRica and France ".
