(ANSA) - NEW DELHI, APRIL 11 - Waiting in Sri Lanka for the speech that Premier Mahinda Rajapaksa will address to the nation this evening.
After the crowd peacefully besieged the entrance to the seat of government in Colombo over the weekend, today there were clashes in Chilaw between supporters of the Premier and a group of people demanding his resignation.
Police said security forces intervened to disperse the protesters and revealed that the tension peaked when supporters of the government, led by a former minister, Sanath Nishantha, attacked the protesters.
The Daily Mirror newspaper reports that a group of foreign tourists, who are unable to leave the country due to lack of fuel, launched a demonstration today in Ambagonda, asking the Premier for help.
Also according to the newspaper, a 43-year-old man was found dead this morning, apparently from natural causes, in his car parked in front of a petrol station, where he had queued up last night to fill up.
The national fuel company has announced that, starting tomorrow, the sale of gasoline and diesel will be suspended for three days.
