(ANSA) - ROME, APRIL 11 - Over 7.1 million people displaced by the war in Ukraine, and about half of them are children: Andrea Iacomini, spokesman for Unicef Italy, said this.
"Almost two months after the start of the war in Ukraine, the situation of children is increasingly serious. More than half of Ukrainian children are now displaced within the country or have fled to neighboring countries. The boys and girls - adds Iacomini - continue to being killed, injured and deeply traumatized by the devastating violence that surrounds them, are terrorized, in shock and desperate for safety.
Children across Ukraine are in urgent need of stability, protection and care.
Attacks with explosive weapons continue in populated urban areas, increasingly hitting their homes, schools, hospitals, water systems, power plants and places where civilians seek shelter. "
"Thousands of boys and girls - he continues - continue to be forced to protect themselves in underground shelters and subway stations, where conditions are disastrous".
"War and mass displacement" - he concludes - "are damaging the livelihoods of families by leaving many people without sufficient income to meet their basic needs and unable to provide adequate support for their children".
Ukraine is running out of essential supplies, which is why "a package of supplies and services for women and children is increasingly urgent".
