(ANSA) - WASHINGTON, APRIL 11 - From today, US citizens can select the 'X' to indicate the third gender in their passport applications.
A breakthrough strongly desired by the Biden administration to allow people who do not recognize themselves in the binary category male or female to have access to identity documents that reflect them.
The option will be available for other forms of documentation next year.
There are already at least eleven countries around the world that have the 'X' or 'others' option for passports, according to the Employers Network for Equality and Inclusion organization.
These include Canada, Germany, Argentina, but also Asian countries such as India, Nepal and Pakistan.
