Normally, since 2019, the tax return has to be submitted to the tax office on July 31.

According to a report by the United Income Tax Aid (VLH),

before 2019 the tax return had to be submitted to the tax office

by May 31 at

the latest .

However, there are exceptions.

When must the tax return for 2021 be submitted to the tax office in 2022 at the latest?

Normally, the deadline for submitting the tax return to the tax office is July 31st.

According to the report, however, due to the corona pandemic, the filing deadline for the

2020 tax return was postponed to August 31, 2022 by a tax professional

At the same time, according to the VLH, the waiting period during which no interest on arrears is charged on the tax liability was also extended.

What if the deadline for filing the tax return falls on a weekend?

If July 31st is a Saturday or Sunday,

the submission deadline is automatically extended to the following Monday

The deadline for submission is August 1, 2022, unless the Federal Ministry of Finance announces any official changes.

If you voluntarily submit your tax return to the tax office

you can do this retrospectively for up to four years.

For the 2021 tax return, for example, this means that you must have submitted it to the tax office by December 31, 2025 at the latest.

What happens if I forget to submit my tax return to the tax office on time?

For tax returns that are not submitted within 14 months after the end of the calendar year or after the taxation date, the tax office determines a

late

fee.

This amounts

to 0.25 percent of the assessed tax

, but at least 25 euros per late month, up to a maximum of 25,000 euros.

According to the United Income Tax Assistance, the late payment surcharge is automatically added to the tax liability in the tax assessment or deducted from a tax refund.
