While the official selection will be presented this Thursday, the magazine Variety evokes the possibility of a new feature film by the filmmaker. A mysterious project that could be presented at the very beginning of this 75th edition.

One month before the 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which is due to take place from May 17 to 28, speculation is rife regarding the official selection presented this Thursday in Paris by Thierry Frémaux.

The latest rumour?

A feature film made on the sly by David Lynch and featuring one of his favorite actresses, Laura Dern, could open the event on Tuesday May 17.

The Cannes Film Festival unveils its official selection on Thursday

We owe this revelation to

Variety

who would hold it from

“two well-informed sources”

.

This feature film would therefore feature actress Laura Dern

“either as a cameo or as a supporting role”

, specifies the magazine.

The 55-year-old actress knows the director well.

She has already made several feature films under his orders, from

Blue Velvet

(1986),

Sailor and Lula

(1990) with Nicolas Cage (Palme d'Or in 1990) to

Inland Empire

(2006).

The cast would also be completed by

“several regular collaborators”

of David Lynch, reports the American media.

Two scenarios are also possible as to the exact content of this film.

Is it new and produced on the sly?

Or is it the pilot episode of

Wisteria

, the new drama series that the 76-year-old filmmaker is preparing for the Netflix streaming platform.

In the case of the second option, we would then find the actress Naomi Watts on the red carpet.

She is part of this series project, having co-starred twenty years ago with Laura Haring in

Mulholland Drive

.

Ordered in 2020, the

Wisteria

project would have been hampered by the Covid-19 pandemic.

But not buried.

Laura Dern would also appear in the credits of Wisteria.

A few days before the announcement of the official selection, other prestigious names are circulating.

Thus we evoke

Crimes of the Future

by David Cronenberg with the French actress Léa Seydoux, as well as Kristen Stewart and Viggo Mortenson.

George Miller's new film,

Three Thousand Years of Longing,

which stars Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba could also be presented on the Croisette.

Just like

Showing Up

, the latest production from director Kelly Reichardt, starring Michelle Williams.

A program that would be completed, according to

Variety

, by the film

The Five Devils

by Léa Mysius with Adèle Exarchopoulos, as well as

Tchaikovsky's wife

by Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov, who would have been added to the competition at the last moment.

Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda

's feature film

Broker , which won the Palme d'Or in 2018 for

A Family Affair

, could also be hosted at Cannes.

For certain cinematographic productions, the situation has, however, become clearer.

The Cannes Film Festival has already confirmed that the film

Top Gun: Maverick

, which stars Tom Cruise, Miles Teller and Jennifer Connelly, will have its world premiere, accompanied by the musical drama

Elvis

from director Baz Luhrmann, with Tom Hanks, Olivia DeJonge and Austin Butler.

Other questions remain unanswered, in particular that of the identity of the person who will chair the jury and will therefore succeed Spike Lee.

Several personalities are approached to embody this role.

Among the first names comes that of Asghar Farhadi.

But the recent accusation of plagiarism for his film

A hero

, could harm the Iranian director, Grand Prix de Cannes in 2021.

Thierry Frémaux, the artistic director and general delegate of Cannes would pinch for the Spanish actress Pénélope Cruz.

But this one could be in competition with the feature film

by Emanuele Crialese.

The French actress Marion Cotillard would also have been approached to take on the role of president, but the latter appears in the casting of the film

Brother and sister

of Arnaud Desplechin, which could also be in selection.

Answer to all these questions, this Thursday around noon.
