Orchids are the most popular houseplants in this country.

In order for them to thrive, you need to take good care of them.

Casting goes faster than expected.

Munich – Pink, violet or white: orchids come in different colors and are a colorful eye-catcher in your own home.

It is therefore not surprising that orchid plants are among our most popular indoor plants.

The butterfly orchid, also known as Phalaenopsis, is particularly common in apartments.

It is particularly easy to care for and can be combined well with green plants such as the Monstera deliciosa* to give your home a touch of the exotic.

So that your orchids can bloom beautifully, it is best to choose a sunny, bright location, for example on a windowsill.

But make sure that the houseplant does not get too much sun, because the orchid does not like that either.

Orchids are considered difficult houseplants.

This does not detract from their popularity.

The orchid is also a bit finicky when it comes to watering.

She prefers only room-warm and lime-free water.

However, the substrate must not be too moist, so the following does not apply here: a lot helps a lot!

Otherwise the moisture will build up and the orchid will start to rot*.

Therefore, you should only water the exotic plant sparingly.

But how often does my orchid need water replenishment?

Watering orchids: Ice cubes are an easy-care alternative

Instead of watering once a week, watch your plant throughout the week to see when it's time again.

Basically, when you water orchids, it is important to make sure that you do not forget any spot and that you water everything evenly*.

Then wait until the next watering until the plant has absorbed all the water and has dried out again.

When the time comes, you can easily test it by gently sticking a finger into the substrate, about as deep as the first knuckle.

If the soil feels completely dry, you should water the orchid*.

If you don't want to do this, you can simply use the end of a pen, a wooden stick or the end of a fork.

If soil sticks to it after you pull the object out again, you can wait a little longer to water.

Another low-maintenance alternative is to use ice cubes*.

Once a week, simply place three ice cubes in the middle of the pot around the plant.

Be careful not to let the ice touch the leaves.

When it melts, it provides enough moisture to the orchid evenly.

Watering orchids: when is the right time

In principle, experts also recommend watering orchids better in the morning*.

This allows any water splashes on the leaves to evaporate more quickly as the day warms up.

Otherwise, you should wipe them away quickly with a microfiber cloth or kitchen paper, otherwise there is a risk of rotting again in the long run.

Finally, another tip: the air in the room should never be too dry*.

After all, the orchid originally came from the tropical rain forest.

Therefore, it is advisable to regularly spray at least the leaves of the plant with water.
