Unfortunately, it gets old-fashioned so quickly and, in the worst case,

mold

can form after just a few days.

Especially in summer when the climate is warm and humid, bread molds faster than expected.

Mold loves moisture.

Warm air can absorb more moisture, which is why warm, humid summer air provides the perfect breeding ground for mold - unfortunately also on food such as bread.

If your

bread is moldy

, you may think that cutting off a generous piece is enough?

Unfortunately, no!

Moldy bread belongs in the trash, even if it's a shame.

Even if you can only see small dots with the naked eye: invisible mold spores run through the entire bread.

You should also not eat other foods such as juicy fruit, meat and dairy products if they have mold, but throw them away immediately.

Proper storage

is all the more important

to prevent unnecessary food waste.

Mold quickly spreads to bread, especially in warm temperatures.

This is how you store bread properly and don't give mold a chance

This is the best way to store your bread so that it can be kept for as long as possible:

  • You can leave the bread in

    the original packaging (paper bag from the bakery, plastic bag from the supermarket), but then you should eat it quickly.

    The air cannot circulate well in such bags, which means that mold spreads quickly.

  • The good old 

    bread box 

    is still the best place to store bread.

    It's clean, dry and well ventilated here.

    At room temperature, but ideally at 12 to 18 degrees, the baked goods will keep for a particularly long time.

    There are bread bins made of wood, metal and plastic, but also special 

    ceramic bread bins

    and fabric bags. 

  • You should clean your bread box regularly with vinegar water to prevent mold from forming - ideally once a week.

  • In the refrigerator?

    Anyone who thinks that storing bread in the refrigerator is doing something good is wrong.

    The air in the refrigerator is too dry and the bread gets old quickly.

    Exception: In

    the summer

    , when the temperatures are very warm and the air is very humid, it is better to keep wheat bread in the fridge, especially for wheat bread.

Best tip: Freeze bread

Cut your bread into slices and freeze them in sealable freezer bags.

If necessary, simply defrost the required amount at room temperature or quickly bake the bread slices in the toaster.

So you always have fresh bread in the house - without any risk of mold.

Properly stored,

wheat bread

can be kept for up to two days and

wholemeal bread

for up to nine days.

Frozen much longer, of course: you can store bread this way for at least six months.
