Working parents can apply for longer child sick days because of Corona.

The legislature extends the sick pay scheme.

Berlin – Good news for all parents: If your child cannot go to daycare or school due to a corona infection or corona-related restrictions, you can continue to be released.

The German Bundestag had again extended the recently expiring "Act on the Extension of the Social Service Providers Act".

The corona pandemic* is still a challenge for parents: if your child falls ill with corona or if the daycare center has to close because caregivers have tested positive for corona and are ill, it is often difficult for the parents of the child concerned to go about their jobs.

What remains is for many only the emergency brake "sick call".

This is possible by telephone until the end of May 2022*.

An enormous relief during this time is the increased possibility that parents in Germany can apply for child sick days or child sickness benefit.

Children's sick days because of Corona: How many children's sick days can be taken?

According to the above-mentioned law, 30 days of child sick leave or benefit can be used per child and per parent.

A pair of parents can therefore take 60 days for a child.

If you have several children, you are entitled to a maximum of 65 working days.

Single parents, who may be additionally challenged in the corona pandemic and urgently need support, are legally entitled to 60 days per child - with several children to a maximum of 130 working days.

Children's sick days because of Corona: In which cases can extra children's sick days be taken?

Irrespective of whether parents work at home in their home office or at another location, they are entitled to additional child sick days or child sickness benefit.

Until September 23, 2022, parents can use the children's sick days if:

  • the day care center or school is closed due to the pandemic,

  • face-to-face teaching at school is not possible,

  • the range of childcare in the facilities is limited or not possible

  • or there is a recommendation from the authorities not to take advantage of the care offers in school or daycare.

The difficulties in childcare during Corona are not always easy for parents to reconcile with work, especially mothers then work almost more than two full-time jobs*.

The extra children's sick days can be an enormous relief for the parents concerned in order to give them the time they need for their child - for example to find out how they can get the recovered status for their own child*.

Children's sick days and children's sick pay in the corona pandemic: who is entitled?

All legally insured and working parents whose child is not older than twelve years and is legally insured are entitled to extra child sick days or child sickness benefit - provided there is no other person in the household who can look after the child.

For many, the question often arises as to how high the child sickness benefit is.

Children's sick days and children's sickness benefit in the corona pandemic: how is it applied for?

If you have to look after your child during your working hours, you must inform your employer and call in sick.

You need a medical certificate for the child and you or your employer from the pediatrician from the first day, instead of the third day if you become ill yourself.

In any case, you should be able to present a sick note*.

Furthermore, in the case of pandemic-related care, you must submit an application for child sickness benefit to your child's health insurance company.

It is possible that health insurance companies require proof from the facility (daycare center, after-school care center or school).

With the corresponding certificate from the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, a care facility can confirm that it had to close for reasons of infection protection or that access is restricted.

The corona pandemic is and will remain a major psychological challenge - for children and parents.

So it is not surprising that the additional children's sick days and the extra children's sick pay are used extensively by parents.
