Covid, Fiaso: admissions drop by 1% after 3 weeks of growth

2022-04-13T12:30:34.227Z

The Fiaso survey shows the first trend reversal of the departments. Intensive care (ANSA) stable

The decline of Covid shelters has slowly begun

.

In the last monitored week, April 5-12, the

number of hospitalized patients decreased by 1%

.

This is what emerges from the survey in sentinel hospitals of

the Italian Federation of Healthcare and Hospitals

(Fiaso).

A week ago there was a 3.6% increase.

This is the first

reversal of the trend

after three consecutive weeks in which hospitalizations had grown in tandem with the resurgence of infections.

Most of the hospitalizations in ordinary wards decreased.

In resuscitation, however.

the situation remained practically stable.

The share of patients hospitalized with Covid without respiratory and pulmonary symptoms, but in hospital for the treatment of other pathologies and found positive for the pre-hospitalization swab, has now represented the majority in ordinary wards for months: they are

55%

of the total.

In intensive care almost all patients have

comorbidities

: the percentage of subjects suffering from serious pathologies and hospitalized in resuscitation following infection with the Sars-Cov-2 virus exceeds

90%

both among vaccinated and unvaccinated.

In the last three months

, the average age of ICU patients

has risen by about 5 years, reaching 70 years.

"We are witnessing an inversion of the hospitalization curve with an albeit slight decrease in total cases and it is certainly a good sign that heralds a more significant decline in the coming days", commented the president of Fiaso,

Giovanni Migliore

.

"The data of intensive care - he added - show that the most serious consequences of the Covid-19 disease are paid by extremely vulnerable subjects with an advanced age that has further grown over the months: therefore the frail and the elderly are more at risk.

According to Migliore, "this confirms the goodness of the choice to widen the audience of the fourth vaccination dose to the over 80 and the frail over 60", even if "it is necessary

to push on the second booster

and reiterate its importance in guaranteeing complete immunological coverage" : the president of Fiaso in fact underlined that to date "

less than 10% of the immunocompromised population

" has joined the campaign for the fourth dose.

Fiaso also communicated the data on the

under-18s hospitalized

'for' or 'with' Covid in the pediatric hospitals adhering to its sentinel network: they are 62 in all, 4 more than the April 5 survey.

Fiaso underlines that "the variation is minimal and confirms the continuously fluctuating data already recorded in the previous weeks".

Among minors, the

most affected age group

is always that between

0 and 4 years

(66%).

16%, on the other hand, are between 5 and 11 years old and 18% between 12 and 18 years old.

As stated by Fiaso, "the critical situation for younger children remains, in which Covid determines more committed frameworks, to be better protected by vaccinating their parents".
