(ANSA) - ROME, APRIL 13 - There are 200 dolphins, which every year on average, beach along the Italian coasts and in 2021 the figure was even higher: 210 reported and verified episodes.
The main causes are the interactions with fishing and the accidental catches that occur when the cetaceans follow the fishing boats, and above all the contents of the nets, ending up getting lost or entangled.
On the occasion of the World Dolphin Day announced by the UN for April 14, the team of the European project LifeDelfi, coordinated by Irbim-Cnr, organized a webinar, "Sosdelfini: what to do in case of strandings and sightings?"
which will be broadcast tomorrow, April 14th at 11 am, directly streaming on the social networks of Life Delfi and Legambiente, project partner.
The Life Delphi project, co-financed by the Life program of the European Commission, has been active for about two years along the coasts of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Adriatic including Croatia, in Sicily and Sardinia with various activities to reduce the interactions between the islands and professional fishing.
The fishing operators were provided with acoustic deterrents, and light deterrents to be installed on the nets.
The latest action fielded by teamLife Delphi is the
start of training courses for fishermen in the province of Grosseto.
The first 15 participants, in collaboration with the University of Siena, were illustrated and proposed dolphin watching, the activity of observing dolphins.
The goal is to try to transform idelfini, in the eyes of fishermen, from a threat to a potential economic resource to be exploited.
