Why do you eat fish on Good Friday?

In the Christian faith, Lent* runs from

Ash Wednesday to Easter Saturday

– this year until April 16th.

In Christianity there were once many rules in this regard and very strict fasting.

In the Middle Ages, for example, there were sometimes draconian penalties for violations.

Today, most people fast by avoiding sweets, alcohol, etc.

abstain from eating meat on certain days.

Good Friday, which falls on April 15 this year, is the day Jesus Christ died on the cross according to biblical tradition.

In commemoration of the suffering and death of Jesus Christ, believers abstain from meat, sweets and other luxury foods, especially on the Friday before Easter.

For this reason,

meat is not traditionally eaten on this day

served, but resorted to fish dishes.

Because fish is not one of the "animals of heaven and earth" like meat and is therefore permitted on fasting days.

The

fish is also an ancient symbol

used by Christians to identify themselves.

Crispy fried fish in beer batter: delicious recipe for Good Friday

  • For the beer batter

, first mix the flour with the beer until smooth.

Separate the eggs - do you know the garlic trick that makes separating eggs super easy?

Stir the egg yolk into the batter and season with salt and pepper.

  • Melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat, allow to cool slightly, then stir the melted butter into the beer batter.

Beat the egg whites stiff and fold in.

Let everything swell for 30 minutes.

The beer batter shouldn't be too runny, but dripping viscous from the spoon.

  • For the fish:

Wash and pat dry the salmon fillets.

Drizzle the fish with lemon juice and season with salt and pepper.

  • Frying:

In a large saucepan, heat the oil to 170°C.

Tip if you don't have a kitchen thermometer: You can find out the right temperature by holding a wooden spoon in it - if small bubbles form on the handle, the oil is ready for frying.

  • Pull the fish fillets through the beer batter and fry them in hot fat.

Then lift out with a slotted spoon and drain on some kitchen paper.

  • Alternatively, fried fish can also be prepared with

other types of fish with firm flesh

, such as hake, cod, redfish or zander.

It is best to use fresh fish, but you can also use frozen goods that you can thaw beforehand.

    Potato

salad, mashed potatoes, cucumber salad or just a tartar sauce or dill sauce taste great

as a side dish with fried fish in beer batter .

    Enjoy your meal!
