The star of the HBO hit series tells in an interview to promote his new film, "The Man of the North", that the new project was influenced quite a bit by an important subplot from the third season of the series

Many who have heard of "The Northman", the new film by director and writer Robert Aggress ("The Witch", "The Lighthouse") starring Alexander Skarsgård, could not help thinking that it was a kind of spin-off of Eric Northman (also played by the actor). ) From the HBO hit series "True Blood".

In the new film, Skarsgård plays a Viking prince who goes out to avenge a man who destroyed his family - just like his character in the popular vampire series in which he starred.

It turns out that the actor is aware of the parallels between the two characters he played, and he even says that "this is not an absolute coincidence."

"It's a pledge for everything," Skarsgård said in an interview with EW.

"I want to give some credit to 'True Blood.' At least for giving me the idea for 'Northman.' "The singing and the hard temper of these characters. But it was a distant dream ten years ago."

In the third season of "True Blood," Skarsgård's character gets a background story that sheds light on his origins.

Viewers of the series learned from him that before he became a vampire, Eric Northman was the son of a Viking king named Ulfrik Norman.

In flashback scenes, Eric in a band of wolves orders the vampire Russell Edgington to kill his family.

These scenes, it turns out, helped the actor drive his first Viking movie dream.

"I loved (the original story) so much," Skarsgård said.

"I started thinking 'how amazing it would be to tell a Viking story on a bigger stage and on a more epic scale - not just in two days of flashback scenes, but through an entire Viking journey.'

The actor tried for years to execute his idea without much success, until he met Baggers and the project began to take shape.

In the film, Skarsgard plays a Viking named Amlet, and his plot is based in part on the Nordic tale that inspired William Shakespeare when he wrote the play "Hamlet".

In addition, the film is based on a variety of Viking tales.

Amlet's predicts the death of his father (played by Ethan Hawke) by his uncle, and he returns to his country, before returning after a number of years as a warrior-mature and revengeful Viking.

"The Northman" will be released in the United States on April 22.
