Who will go up the stairs?

One month before the competition for the Palme d'Or, the 75th Cannes Film Festival unveiled a colorful official selection on Thursday.

The general delegate, Thierry Frémaux announced, as usual, the list of elected officials selected from among the 2,200 films submitted to this anniversary edition.

This year again, big names are in the running to succeed the Frenchwoman Julia Ducournau who won the Palme last year with the resounding “Titanium”.

Among them are the Canadian David Cronenberg and his "Crimes of the Future", a horror science fiction film for which he joined Viggo Mortensen, Kristen Stewart and Léa Seydoux, but also James Gray, with "Armageddon Time", which immerses us in the New York of the 1980s.

Kore-Eda, Desplechin, the Dardennne brothers…

Also in competition among the 18 feature films selected, "Broker" by Japanese filmmaker Kore-Eda, who had already won the Palme in 2018 for "A family affair", but also "Triangle Of Sadness" by Swedish director Ruben Ostlund, Palme d'Or 2017 for the squeaky "The Square", "Showing up", fourth film by the American Kelly Reichardt where she finds actress Michelle Williams, or "Holy Spider", a fantastic tale about animality directed by Ali Abbasi.

As for French-speaking authors, are expected "Les Amandiers" by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, "Tori et Lokita", by the Dardenne brothers, "Stars at Noon", by Claire Denis but also "Frère et Soeur", from the great regular in the competition. , Arnaud Desplechin.

The Festival, which returns to its usual dates before the pandemic, from May 17 to 28, will still be able to offer a platform to Ukrainian filmmakers, or to Russians breaking with the Putin regime.

Russian filmmaker Kirill Serebrennikov, who has left his country, will thus present “Tchaikovsky's wife” in the official competition.

After the invasion of Ukraine, the festival immediately announced that it would not host official "Russian delegations", but could invite well-known filmmakers like Kantemir Balagov ("Tesnota"), 30, who fled the Russia, or his elder Kirill Serebrennikov.

As often observed, few directors are again this year among the official selection.

The competition brings together only three women: the American Kelly Reichardt, popular with critics, and the French Claire Denis and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi.

Other highly anticipated films were also mentioned, out of competition, such as "Z (like Z)" by Michel Hazanavicius which will open the competition, the ambitious biopic of Elvis Presley directed by Australian Baz Luhrmann , the very free "Smoking makes you cough" by Quentin Dupieux or even "Top Gun: Maverick", the sequel to the blockbuster that made Tom Cruise a world star 36 years ago.

The composition of the jury will be announced in the coming days, said Thierry Frémaux.
