At what age should I switch to a children's mattress?

    Every child is different.

Some will be ready to go to the “big” bed from 3 years old and for others it will be necessary to wait a little longer.

As a general rule, we switch to a child's mattress, i.e. a 90 x 190 cm mattress, the size of a person's bed around 3 or 4 years old, when the child is too big for the cot.

The solution can also be to move towards a convertible bed that grows at the same time as the child (90 x 140 cm at the start, to reach 90 x 190 or 200 cm in the end).

It is important to choose a good mattress, because it will last for several years (from 3 to 9 - 10 years approximately), and must therefore be of good quality and provide firm support so that the child has a good night's sleep without back pain. due to its growth.

How to choose the best mattress for a child?

To choose the best mattress for your child, a few criteria must be met.

    The size

It seems obvious, but you have to choose the right size mattress, the one that corresponds to the size of the bed.

Indeed, if the bed is 200 cm long and you choose a 190 cm mattress, the latter will move during the child's sleep.

Result: bad nights and certainly back pain.

A children's mattress is generally 90 cm wide and 190 or 200 cm long, for a classic single bed.

For an extendable bed, the dimension is 90 x 140 cm, to which a second part is then added to arrive at a mattress size of 90 x 190 cm.

In terms of thickness, the mattress should be between 16 and 20 cm.

Below, the child will be poorly supported and the mattress may sag quickly.

    The composition

    Several possible technologies:

    • the polyurethane foam and/or memory foam mattress: this is the most common composition for a child's mattress.

The foam is hypoallergenic, comfortable and well suited for children with allergies or back pain.

    • the natural latex mattress: latex is naturally hypoallergenic, anti-mite, antibacterial and thermoregulating.

With it your child will neither be too hot nor too cold.

    • the pocket spring mattress: it offers optimal support for the spine and excellent ventilation.

Ideal for children who sweat a lot.

    The accessories

For a child's mattress, the essential accessory is the mattress protector or the mattress protector, because small accidents can still happen!

Ideally, choose a waterproof mattress protector made of natural materials (cotton or jersey), which has Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification. This ensures that the product does not contain any components harmful to your child's health.
