L'Envol, the new feature film by director Pietro Marcello, will be presented in world premiere as the opening film at the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes which for this edition will take place from 18 to 27 May 2022.

Freely inspired by The Scarlet Sails by Aleksandr Grin, writer Russian pacifist of the twentieth century, the film by Pietro Marcello, the first made in France, is a folk tale, musical and historical, bordering on magical realism.

The cast consists of Juliette Jouan, a young actress making her film debut, Raphaël Thierry, Louis Garrel, Noémie Lvovsky, Ernst Umhauer, François Négret, Yolande Moreau.

The film is produced by CG Cinema, Avventurosa with Rai Cinema, The Match Factory and ARTE France Cinéma, and is made with the contribution and sponsorship of the Directorate General for Cinema and Audiovisual - Ministry of Culture.

The film will be distributed in Italy by 01 Distribution.

The screenplay was written by Pietro Marcello and Maurizio Braucci with Maude Ameline and with the participation of Geneviève Brisac.

For the shooting Pietro Marcello collaborated with a Franco-Italian troupe: Marco Graziaplena for photography, Pascaline Chavane for costumes, Christian Marti for scenography, Carole La Page for editing and Oscar winner Gabriel Yared for music.

The story is set in the north of France: Juliette, a young motherless girl, lives with her father, Raphaël, a soldier who survived the First World War.

Passionate about music and singing, Juliette has a lonely spirit.

One day, along a river bank, she meets a sorceress who predicts that scarlet sails will come to take her away from her village.

Juliette will never stop believing in prophecy.

The selection of the Quinzaine will be announced on April 19th by the artistic director Paolo Moretti.
