Crunchy, fresh, sweet: That's how strawberries should be.

But when they go moldy quickly, the disappointment is great.

If you store them properly, they will last longer.

Hamburg – With spring comes many types of fruit that we missed, including sweet strawberries.

Many are now looking forward to conjuring up cakes, pastries and delicious summer salads from the red fruits.

But the appetite for the popular dummy fruit quickly vanishes when it has gone bad no sooner have you bought it in the supermarket and brought it home.

After all, strawberries are delicate and can quickly become moldy.

But strawberries can last up to a week if they are properly stored* in the fridge.

The "preparations" begin as soon as they bring the strawberries home.

According to the Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR), breathable packaging such as cardboard or wood chips* are best suited for transport.

Also make sure that the strawberries, which belong to the rose family, are on top of the other purchases on the way or at least there is enough space in between.

Otherwise, the pressure-sensitive summer fruit will be crushed, which can lead to a red mess in the shopping bag.

To keep the red fruits aromatic, you should immediately store the fruits in the fridge*.

There you can put them unwashed in a bowl and place them whole in the vegetable drawer.

If you don't have one at hand, you can alternatively simply use a sieve.

Store strawberries correctly: Purée better after freezing

Only when you eat them or want to process them into jam or compote* should you rinse them briefly and remove the stalks and leaves, advises the NDR.

If you leave strawberries in water* for too long, you also risk the strawberries losing their unique taste.

If you want to keep the red summer fruits longer, you can also freeze them whole, cut or pureed.

But be careful: these are often very mushy after defrosting.

It is therefore advisable to process the frozen strawberries straight away in the blender* for smoothies or desserts.
