(ANSA) - BEIJING, APRIL 20 - Shanghai reported seven more deaths from Covid-19 on Tuesday, bringing the toll in the city to 17 in three days, when local authorities are struggling to keep the Omicron variant under control and to gradually restart production activities after weeks of lockdown.
According to city authorities, the deceased people were afflicted with serious illnesses, such as lung cancer and diabetes, with 5 over the age of 70.
"Patients became seriously ill and died despite the doctors' efforts," the municipality explained in a post on social media.
Shanghai recorded 2,494 confirmed cases and 16,407 asymptomatic carriers on Tuesday, falling below 20,000 for the first time in recent weeks.
Since the end of February, more than 400,000 infections have been reported out of 26 million residents.
In China, on the other hand, infections with local transmission were 2,753, reported the National Health Commission, specifying that 133 were detected in Jilin and two in Beijing.
New asymptomatics stood at 17,066.
With seven victims in Shanghai, the total deaths from Covid-19 have risen nationwide to 4,655 in over two years of pandemic.
