(ANSA) - WASHINGTON, APRIL 20 - "In responding to the international jump in commodity prices, governments must give priority to protecting the weakest. An essential objective is to avoid a food crisis while maintaining social cohesion".
This was stated by the International Monetary Fund.
Rising fossil fuel prices following the war in Ukraine highlights the need to accelerate the transition to clean-to-renewable energy, adds the Fund, which would increase energy security and could achieve climate goals.
The IMF notes that governments are under pressure to help their citizens cope with high energy prices.
In doing so they should "take into account budgetary limits but also the climate emergency".
