The four people who were found dead in a Chemnitz residential building on Easter Monday apparently died from gunshot wounds.
A pistol was found next to the bodies, which was most likely the murder weapon, said Chemnitz chief public prosecutor Wolfgang Klein of the dpa news agency.
However, it is still unclear in which order the people died.
Klein did not confirm a report in the newspaper "Freie Presse" that the 72-year-old man first shot his 69-year-old wife and then a younger couple aged 32 and 34.
It is now a matter of determining the course of the crime and its background, and neighbors will also be asked about this.
The two couples had lived in the house together.
The public prosecutor's office deliberately does not give any information about the child of the younger couple.
"The child is the one who suffers the most," said Klein.
"Bild" and "Freie Presse" report that the child has been brought to safety and is being psychologically cared for.
The four bodies were found on Easter Monday in a house in the Mittelbach district of Chemnitz.
The police had received a tip.
