Stiftung Warentest examined wet food for adult dogs and puppies.

Instead of well-known branded products, cheap supermarket own brands are convincing.

Kassel – There are now many types of dog food.

Above all, they should provide adult dogs and puppies with sufficient nutrients and contain no harmful additives.

But which dog food supplier has the best product?

Stiftung Warentest examined 22 types of wet food for adult dogs and six for puppies.

The result was that more expensive is not always better.

In addition, dog owners have to adapt to changes in food purchases: some dog food manufacturers are struggling with delivery bottlenecks.

However, more than half of the types of food for adult dogs were convincing and received the rating “very good” or “good” from Stiftung Warentest.

The test winners are mostly products from supermarket and discount own brands.

Stiftung Warentest rates the following types of wet food for adult dogs as “very good”:

  • Edeka:

Fine meal with lamb, chicken, pasta & carrots

  • Aldi:

Romeo Classic Fine pâté with beef & country vegetables

  • Lidl:

Orlando chunks with poultry & muscle meat in sauce

  • Rewe:

    Yes!

Juicy pie with game and poultry

Stiftung Warentest takes a close look at dog food: Products were examined in the laboratory

According to Stiftung Warentest, the dog food was tested in the laboratory.

It was determined how much fat, protein, minerals, vitamins and trace elements the product contained.

The test was designed to meet the needs of an adult, moderately active dog weighing 15 kilograms.

In addition, it was checked whether the types of food contained harmful substances or undesirable components such as horn, feathers or bristles.

Since some dog food manufacturers label their products as "grain-free" and "no added sugar", the laboratory also examined the products accordingly.

According to Stiftung Warentest, no harmful substances have been detected.

Two organic products were only rated "sufficient": The feeding recommendation did not match or the nutrient content was not convincing.

The dog food from Animonda Gran Carno did the worst: It lacks phosphorus, linoleic acid and magnesium - important nutrients for dogs.

These are the three types of dog food with the worst test results:

wet food product

Evaluation by Stiftung Warentest

Mac's: Chicken & Lamb

sufficient

Wild Land: Adult, Organic Chicken with Pumpkin & Zucchini (Organic)

sufficient

Animonda Gran Carno: Adult, beef + heart

inadequate

Puppy food was also tested: only two types of wet food were convincing

Young dogs need special attention, whether it's with food or when puppies go to new homes.

But the test result for puppy food was significantly worse than for adult food: only two products were rated "good", two types of wet food were rated "poor".

This applies to the wet food from

Fressnapf

, Premiere Meati with chicken, Junior and the puppy food from

Zooroyal

, Junior, with lamb and veal with 70% meat and offal.

The reason: the manufacturer's information on the packaging.

The recommended rations are inappropriate, and the feed also lacks important nutrients.

But the right food is extremely important, especially for puppies.

According to the Stiftung Warentest, the feed should help to form a lot of tissue and strong bones within a short period of time.

Puppy food should contain high quality protein and adequate amounts of calcium, phosphorus, copper and zinc.

These are the two test winners (rated “good”) for puppy food:

  • Pedigree Junior:

    Pie with poultry

  • Edeka:

Fine meal with beef & chicken Junior

Not only the nutrient content is important for puppies, but also the amount of food.

According to information from Stiftung Warentest, young dogs should not eat too much, otherwise they will grow up too quickly.

It can happen that the bones do not mineralize enough and are not as strong.

Dog owners should not only pay attention to the right food, but also to the new animal welfare dog ordinance.
