A pizza delivery service uses AI and technological advances.
As a test, a robot is now delivering the Quattro Formaggio to customers' front doors.
Berlin - The pizza delivery service Domino's is one of those companies that is always trying something new.
There have already been test runs to deliver the pizza with drones.
Now Domino's Pizza in Germany is trying out a new technology: a delivery robot.
Robot supplies the "Golden Mile"
This robot is probably the only one of its kind currently circling the sidewalks of Berlin.
And it is also the first delivery robot to receive official permission to operate in public spaces in Berlin.
The pizza baker started the project together with the Berlin company Teraki.
The GmbH specializes in software for artificial intelligence.
The company's mission is to enable precise machine learning in the automotive, drone and robotic industries without compromising safety.
Because the robot is capable of learning.
Domino's robot learns with every order
Deliveries will be made using a four-wheeled delivery robot that will carry fresh, hot pizza and snacks in an insulated compartment, the press release says.
With its special, distinctive sensors - cameras, radar, telematics - the delivery robot learns more and more with every order to find its way on the sidewalks of the capital.
The area of application is initially locally in Charlottenburg North in order to optimize existing algorithms and thus increase the degree of autonomy of the robot with each delivery.
“We are thrilled to be able to offer robotic delivery with Domino's.
Teraki's leading technology behind this robot comes from the automotive industry and ensures safer deliveries at lower costs.
Our software has been tested in the automotive industry and delivers excellent results, which have also been certified by the authorities.
This is exactly what we are doing together with Domino's Pizza, who are an innovator in this area,” says Geert-Jan van Nunen, CCO of Teraki.
Domino's robot is not intended to replace drivers
The robot should not replace humans.
Rather, Domino's would like to set the course with the project in order to react to the challenges on the market in the future.
The cooperation with the AI company Teraki and their extensive experience in this area plays a decisive role: "We are proud to be driving this project forward together with Teraki and to learn from each other in order to optimally prepare Domino's for the requirements of the market of the future says Andrè ten Wolde, Domino's Pizza Enterprise CEO Europe.
Especially with regard to the highly competitive labor market and the lack of drivers, they are convinced that they will be dependent on the support of delivery robots in the future.
"In the future, we see delivery robots as a supplement to our drivers in the immediate vicinity of our stores and never as a replacement," emphasizes the CEO.
The aim of the test phase, which lasts several weeks, is to collect sufficient information that will be helpful for the further development and future use of delivery robots in urban areas.
In a test of major pizza delivery services, Domino's and its competitors disappointed.
