(ANSA) - ROME, APRIL 26 - Father & soldier by Mathieu Vadepied, with Omar Sy, Alassane Diong and Jonas Bloquet, opens the UnCertain Regard competition on Wednesday 18 May.
This was announced by the Cannes Film Festival.
The film highlights the story of the Fantisenegalese, forgotten heroes of the First World War, forced to leave their homeland and fight to free France.
The Franco-Senegalese co-production, shot in France and Senegal, tells the story of Bakary Diallo (Omar Sy), a father who enlisted in the French army in 1917 to join his 17-year-old son Thierno, who was enlisted by force.
Sent to the front, father and son will have to face the war together.
Galvanized by the fervor of his officer who wants to lead him to the heart of the battle, Thierno comes of age, while Bakary does everything to get him out of the fight and bring him home safe and sound.
Illuminating the ground of the Peuls, near the Mauritanian border, MathieuVadepied evokes another tragic dimension of colonization, when France was looking for soldiers in West Africa.
