Shkodran Mustafi, the 2014 German soccer world champion, was robbed from his villa in Spain while he was there himself.
The main command of the Guardia Civil in Valencia confirmed this to the sports information service.
"Investigations are ongoing," said a spokeswoman.
Mustafi himself told the "Bild": "I can confirm the incident, but I don't want to comment on it because I don't want to disrupt the investigation.
But I'm more or less fine."
Loot worth almost a million euros
The Spanish newspaper "Levante" reports that "jewellery, cash, branded bags and other items" worth almost one million euros were stolen from the Mustafi family in the night from Sunday to Monday.
Mustafi, 30, who plays for UD Levante and lives in Betera near Valencia, noticed the thieves half an hour later and fled.
The police assume that Mustafi's house had been scouted through photos on his social media profiles.
The burglars may be attributed to a gang specializing in footballers.
They had probably gained access to the property through a neighboring golf course and got in through a balcony window.
Mustafi has filed a complaint.
