Train and bus travel is cheaper with the 9-euro ticket in summer.

The most important information for consumers at a glance.

Kassel – Due to the sharp rise in energy prices as a result of the Ukraine conflict, the federal government has agreed on a relief package for all citizens and has passed a corresponding draft law.

The use of train and bus is to become cheaper for three months from June 1st.

A monthly ticket for public transport will then only cost 9 euros.

The federal government wants to take over the estimated costs of 2.5 billion euros.

But that is not enough for the countries.

They demand significantly more money in order to be able to compensate for the sharp rise in public transport costs.

The corona pandemic has caused passenger numbers in local public transport to collapse.

In addition, the costs for energy and personnel have risen sharply.

The federal states are therefore demanding a further 1.5 billion euros from the federal government.

The Bundestag and Bundesrat should agree to the necessary legal changes on May 19th and 20th so that the 9-euro monthly ticket can start on time in June.

The 9-euro ticket is coming: where and for whom is the monthly ticket valid?

The 9-euro ticket for bus and train should make it possible to travel throughout Germany with local public transport.

For the three summer months of June, July and August, the ticket should be available for nine euros per month.

Existing monthly tickets and annual subscriptions from consumers will be charged.

The 9-euro ticket is also valid on local and regional public transport across transport association and national borders.

It can therefore be used in buses and trains such as trams and subways.

However, the ticket is not valid for long-distance transport.

The ticket is always valid for one month.

If you want to use the 9-euro ticket every three months, you pay a total of 27 euros.

From June, the 9-euro ticket will then be available nationwide from ticket machines, at train ticket offices, online and in the Deutsche Bahn Navigator app.

There is no restriction to certain groups of people.

9-euro ticket for bus and train in Germany: There are also disadvantages

At first glance, however, the 9-euro ticket for bus and train does not only bring advantages.

Various passenger associations are already warning of overloading tourist routes.

It threatened, therefore, overcrowded trains.

Especially on popular routes on which there are no long-distance trains as an alternative, travelers must then expect full trains, says the chairman of the Baden-Württemberg state association of “Pro Bahn”, Stefan Buhl to the Südwestrundfunk.
