A dozen people, according to an initial provisional toll, were killed today in Kabul following a powerful explosion in a mosque.
This was announced by the Afghan Ministry of the Interior.
"The explosion occurred two hours after Friday prayers, while the faithful were performing rituals," said the ministry's deputy spokesperson, Bismillah Habib, adding that at least 15 people were injured.
The explosion occurred at the Khalifa Saeb mosque in the center of the capital, where several ambulances immediately rushed to transport the victims to a nearby hospital.
Taliban fighters then prevented the press from entering the hospital.
A series of deadly bomb attacks, in which dozens of people have died, have hit the country in the last two weeks, during the holy month of Ramadan.
On April 21, a bomb attack on a Shiite mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif (north), claimed by the Islamic State group (Isis), left at least 12 dead and 58 injured.
The next day, at least 36 people were killed in another bomb attack on a mosque frequented by Sufis during Friday prayers in Kunduz (northeast).
A few days earlier, explosions at a boys' school in a Shia neighborhood of Kabul killed six people.
