Broad beans and pecorino, by tradition, have always accompanied the trips out of town on May 1st.
While waiting for a sunny day and spring temperatures, the Italians, meanwhile, are stocking up on them.
According to the analysis prepared by BMTI on the basis of data from the Chambers of Commerce, the prices of Pecorino Romano PDO have never reached previously, now close to the threshold of 11 € / kg and an increase of 26% compared to April 2021. .
Growth started at the beginning of last year, supported by a reduction in production in 2021 and, above all, by the recovery of exports to the United States.
After the setback in 2020 (in value -1.1% compared to 2019), in fact, the Italian export of Pecorino returned to increase in 2021 (+ 27.2% on an annual basis), thanks to the reopening of the foreign catering and the strong demand from the United States.
The USA is the main outlet market for Pecorino Made in Italy which has reached an increase of + 40.3% on an annual basis (after the 8.3% decline recorded in 2020).
As regards beans, however, according to the data processed by BMTI on the surveys carried out in the wholesale markets belonging to the Italmercati Business Network, this week, a physiological drop in prices was detected (-33.4% compared to the previous week).
Throughout its campaign, the product has maintained medium-high prices which are now falling, adapting to the typical trend of May which marks the end of the campaign.
Furthermore, the temperatures that are not yet high are still allowing good product quality with a wide availability (higher in the center-north and almost running out in the south).
