Cannes Classics, Sciuscià restored and Paul Newman event

LA MAMAN ET LA PUTAIN by Jean Eustache will be the opening film of Cannes Classics in a program, that of the festival (17-28 May) on the classics that are now increasingly rich. (HANDLE)


(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 02 - LA MAMAN ET LA PUTAIN by JeanEustache will be the inauguration film of Cannes Classics in a program, the one of the festival (May 17-28) on the classics that are becoming richer and richer.

In the program from Italy, the restoration from the Cineteca di Bologna with MartinScorsese's The Film Foundation of the neorealist masterpiece by Vittorio De SicaSCIUSCIA '(1946), the first film in the history of the Academy to win, in 1947, the Academy Award for the best foreign film (all era called "Honorary Award"), which will be presented as a world premiere.


   And it is an event the presentation of two episodes of the expected couseries conceived and produced by the actor Ethan Hawke with Scorsese executive producer on the legendary couple Joanne Woodward and PaulNewman, THE LAST MOVIE STARS, between life and careers and memories of colleagues in a documentary defined as fascinating and moving. Hawke himself will present on the Croisette.


   Another biographical documentary in world premiere will be the one on Romy Schneider which in '57 was in competition with the first memorable Sissi: 'ROMY, A FREE WOMAN' by Lucie Caries.

Then there will be the portrait made by Julie Bertuccelli of JANE CAMPION (to reiterate that the star at the Oscars was the first absolute woman to win the Palme d'Or in '93), a tribute to GÉRARD PHILIPE, another to PATRICK DEWAERE who has been going for 40 years and yet another to the deceased screenwriter JEAN-CLAUDE CARRIÈRE.


   We will celebrate the 70th anniversary of SINGING IN THE RAIN (Singingin the Rain) by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen of which an incredible restoration will be presented in 4k.

The classics restored and presented as a world premiere also include IL PROCESSO unclassico by Orson Welles from the novel by Kafka with Anthony Perkins among the protagonists (1962) and L'ULTIMO VALZER by MartinScorsese (1978) in which the American director filmed the farewell concert of The Band.


   The country of honor is India while a double Olympic film will be presented with the official film of the 1972 Munich Olympic Games directed by 8 directors from all over the world and the one presented in the world premiere of the Olympic Games in Tokyod directed by Naomi Kawase, in view of Paris 2024.
