In the event of flooding, quarantine, power failure and the like, it makes sense to have an emergency supply in the house.

The federal government recommends the following foods for 10 days.

The images that are currently reaching us from Ukraine unsettle many people and raise the question of whether one would be prepared privately for an emergency.

In Germany, it is more a case of crises such as floods, storms or power failures that present us with challenges.

Regardless of current events, it makes sense for every citizen

to store

food and drinking water for ten days at home, advises Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) in an interview with the Handelsblatt (behind payment barrier).

In crisis situations, you can stay at home and relieve emergency services and supermarkets.

In addition to the emergency backpack, which enables you to leave the house quickly in the event of flooding or a fire, this is an important pillar in civil protection.

But what should you really stock in your pantry at home?

Which foods have a particularly long shelf life?

With a checklist and the right tips, you are well prepared.

Create an emergency stock: Pay attention to tastes and special cases

A

general emergency stock checklist

can only serve as a guide.

When creating an emergency supply, always consider the personal preferences of your family or any peculiarities in nutrition such as allergies, intolerances and the like.

If you have a baby and small children in the family, you may need additional baby food or baby food.

You also have to think about the care of your pets, including additional water requirements.

Stocking up properly for emergencies: This is how you should select the food

Emergency supplies include those foods that provide enough calories and nutrients to keep you in the best of health, even in an emergency.

Ideally, choose foods that are not too specific and that you know well so that you can easily create

varied dishes

from them.

It is better to

avoid chilled or even frozen products

, as the power supply is likely to be interrupted in an exceptional situation and the cooling will no longer work.

If you still want to use chilled products, then use them up first.

So when you go shopping, make sure you make the right choice.

But what do you actually put in the shopping cart?

With this question, it is advisable

to follow the

general guidelines of the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance.

Quick help:

You can make yeast yourself in just one night.

Stock up on emergency supplies without hamsters: you really need that much food and drinking water

If you build up stocks, you should

not buy pointlessly and in large quantities

.

The notorious hamsters caused unnecessary bottlenecks at the beginning of the corona pandemic and made it difficult to supply everyone.

So when shopping, stick to the following list roughly.

Emergency Stock: Checklist for your pantry

food group

per person for 10 days

e.g.

B.

beverages

20 liters

2 liters of liquid per person/day for drinking and cooking.

Mineral water, fruit juices, beverages that can be stored for a long time

Cereals, Cereal Products

3.5kg

Bread, potatoes, pasta, rice

vegetables, legumes

4kg

Canned goods are pre-cooked, dried goods must be soaked with additional water and cooked.

Choose storable vegetables: carrots, garlic, onions, celery, squash, turnips

fruit, nuts

2.5kg

Fruit in cans or jars, only storable fresh fruit (apples, oranges, plums, etc.)

milk, dairy products

2.6kg

UHT milk or milk powder

Fish, meat, eggs or whole egg powder

1.5kg

Whole egg powder can be kept for several years, fresh eggs can only be stored for a limited time, so use them regularly

fats, oils

0.357kg

Miscellaneous

upon need

Sugar, sweetener, honey, jam, chocolate, iodized salt and other standard spices.

Ready meals such as canned ravioli, ready-made soups, dried potato products such as mashed potatoes.

Flour, instant broth, cocoa powder, hard biscuits, pretzel sticks

You can access the BBK's guide to emergency preparedness here.

A family of four needs for ten days:

80 liters of water, 14 kg of potatoes, pasta and the like, 16 kg of canned vegetables and legumes, 10 kg of canned fruit, a little over 10 liters of UHT milk, 6 kilos of meat, eggs in the form of whole egg powder (advertising link) and more, 1.5 liters of oil and others.

Of course, amounts will vary when small children are part of the family who eat and drink less, but then there is simply more for the adults.

Store and use emergency supplies correctly: you have to pay attention to this

When buying your emergency supplies, be sure to note the best-before date and use the products accordingly.

It is best to sort them directly on the shelf according to the use-by date and sort newly purchased products at the back.

Store the food in a dark, dry and cool place.

Pack as much airtight as possible.

You should also store a gas cooker (advertising link) and the appropriate gas bottles so that you can use your emergency supplies to cook meals even in the event of a longer power outage.

Prepared in this way, you can stay well looked after at home for a long time.
