A performance artist daubed the painting of a famous situationist – and a right-wing provocateur posted a film about it on the Internet: In Denmark there was a scandal about a work by Asger Jorn.

It is considered one of the most important works by the Danish Situationists: in 1959, the artist Asger Jorn painted over a picture bought at the flea market, which shows a house in a gloomy landscape, with an oversized colorful duck.

Now the painting entitled »The Disturbing Duckling«, which hangs in the Jorn Museum in Silkeborg, has fallen victim to an act of vandalism: the Danish performance artist Ibi-Pippi Orup Hedegaard stuck a drawing of a chick hatching from an egg over the work and signed it such a disfigured original with her own signature, which she applied with Edding.

This is reported, among other things, by Danmarks Radio.

The chick in the egg has since been removed from the picture, but traces of glue remain and the Edding lettering will probably not come off without damaging it.

The performance artist Ibi-Pippi Orup Hedegaard previously achieved a certain notoriety in Denmark when she registered as a woman.

In interviews, she described herself as "a lesbian woman trapped in a man's body."

She did not undergo male-to-female sex reassignment surgery.

Since then, Ibi-Pippi Orup Hedegaard has been living and working as a woman.

In an interview with the television channel TV2, she justified her attack on the Situationist work by saying that she had the same right or not to modify an original painting as Asger Jorn once claimed when he photographed the foreign landscape painting painted over.

The bigger question is who is the owner of an image and what authorizations result from this.

The artist also legitimized her act on Facebook.

The action was documented by an artist who belongs to the right-wing political spectrum: Uwe Max Jensen recorded the incident, commented on it and posted the film on Facebook.

Jensen is close to the extreme right-wing, anti-Islamic party Stram Kurs and is himself known for provocative actions.

Among other things, he urinated on a sculpture by the Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson.
