It doesn’t matter whether it’s naturally cloudy or clear – apple juice has to have a convincing taste.

Apple juice is very popular and there is plenty to choose from.
Stiftung Warentest examined 26 juices and a discounter juice won.
From direct juice, from concentrate, naturally cloudy or clear - there is the right apple juice for every taste.
But not every product lives up to its promises in terms of quality and taste.
Reason enough for Stiftung Warentest* to take a close look at apple juice (03/2022).
The experts took on
26 juices, 16 not-from-concentrate juices (eight of which were organic) and 10 juices made from concentrate
and were only able to report a few positive test results.
Many apple juices lacked taste, smell or mouthfeel, but the testers often had to make compromises in terms of aroma content and chemical quality.

Apple juice in the Stiftung Warentest: This juice is the surprise winner
Of the 26 products in the test, only six juices were able to convince the experts at Stiftung Warentest.
All apple juices with the quality rating "good" are naturally cloudy, but this variant was clearly in the majority with a ratio of 17 to 9.
The test winners are:
brand | product | Price per litre | Quality rating (grade) |
---|---|---|---|
Lidl Solevita | Premium direct apple juice, naturally cloudy | 0.99 euros | good (2.2) |
weser gold | Naturally cloudy apple juice | 0.96 euros | good (2.2) |
Edeka | Apple juice naturally cloudy | 0.99 euros | good (2.3) |
The complete test results can be found here at Stiftung Warentest (payment barrier).
However, the taste winner
was Van Nahmen's "organic apple juice from meadow orchards", at €3.95 the most expensive juice in the test.
Here the testers awarded the taste grade 1.0, but overall it was "only" enough for 2.3.
With the judgment "poor", an
organic product of all things did the worst in the test
.
The "Demeter Apple Juice naturally cloudy" failed the experts mainly because of its musty taste and its chemical quality.
Here the testers suspect microbiologically contaminated fruit or unclean processing.
Conclusion:
If you want to drink good apple juice, you should use naturally cloudy versions, but you don't have to spend a lot of money.
You get good quality for less than one euro, but particularly fine taste has its price.
