The Predatory Announcers

2022-05-02T17:24:43.514Z

In no country do radio announcers have as much social relevance as in the United Kingdom, a fame that has led to too many scandals

As it seems, it is an inexhaustible vein.

And it could be summed up like this: British broadcaster accused of sexual abuse.

Last week the media hurricane swept away Tim Westwood, a powerful rap

DJ

with almost forty years of career.

A joint investigation by

The Guardian

newspaper and BBC Three television has produced a documentary,

Tim Westwood: Abuse of Power

, where seven anonymous girls witness predatory behavior on the part of the announcer, who supposedly took advantage of his popularity in the so-called “urban music” business.

Westwood was the son of an Anglican bishop, but he enjoyed an extra street authenticity after being shot in 1999, in what the rapper environment interpreted as a territorial conflict between London gangs.

The presenter has denied the girls' accusations, although he has been forced to "temporarily" resign from his current program, on the Capital Xtra station, and cancel his next commitments as a

DJ.

His defenders allege that the aforementioned incidents occurred between 1994 and 2013 and were not reported, although in some cases they were briefly leaked on social networks without any reaction: the #MeToo movement did not yet exist.

The response of those responsible for the documentary: the seven victims were women of color who were wary of finding empathy in the police.

It is also true that the British police have lost their righteous ardor in these matters after slips like the one that implicated Cliff Richard in 2014 as an alleged pederast.

The Metropolitan Police instigated a spectacular search of the singer's country residence, after tipping off the BBC to cover the operation, even hiring a helicopter.

Nothing was found and the accusations against Richard were deflated - among the whistleblowers were apprentice blackmailers and confessed criminals - before reaching the courts.

Richard did go to trial for “invasion of privacy” against the police and BBC TV news and won huge damages in both cases.

The offensive against the musician and broadcasters such as Paul Gambaccini derived from the cataclysmic revelations regarding Jimmy Savile, perhaps the best known of the musical presenters during the reign of Elizabeth II.

Savile, who held the titles of Sir and Knight, passed away at the age of 84 with his reputation more or less intact.

Although there were dozens of complaints against him, he overcame them all thanks to his image as a protector of children and his close relations with the royal family.

Only after his death, in 2011, did he burst the dam containing tons of shit: Savile raped boys and girls alike, taking advantage of his stays as a volunteer in hospitals, orphanages and correctional facilities;

he also was not shy if opportunities arose at the BBC facilities.

The Secret Life of Him was so brutal that the recent Netflix documentary,

Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story

, avoids delving into, wow, the pit of necrophilia.

It is worth remembering that the professional status of a British broadcaster is unmatched.

The central role of pop music in the UK makes it easy for BBC veterans (private radio started very, very timidly in 1973) to be genuine national figures.

Their schedules used to be packed: advertising, record compilations, concert and award shows,

DJ sessions,

store openings, recording records if they had even a modicum of musical talent.

They usually ended up headlining TV shows (not necessarily musicals).

In short: his opportunities for sexual promiscuity were plentiful.

And someone will wonder if similar episodes occurred in Spain.

I must report that I have no direct evidence;

rumors, I've heard many.

The radio players who were invited by record companies at D'Angelo and other hostesses.

The head of programming, so horny that he humiliated promotion kids in his bachelor's apartment, whom he recorded on video.

The child duo that endured announcers who got their hands on them while they developed an interview.

The fan show host who announced in a suggestive voice that he was going to sneak into the room of his sweet listeners to ... (the ellipses were his).
