Traumas Exposed: Five Movies for Memorial Day Israel today

2022-05-03T10:08:14.080Z

The pains that Israelis carry with them from the difficult experiences of war and dealing with bereavement have been translated over the years into movies • These are some of the films that deal with these issues

During the Day of Remembrance for the Martyrs of the Israeli Civil War and the Victims of Hostilities, Israeli films are screened on the various channels dealing with the traumas of the war and dealing with the loss.

Here are some of the movies worth watching:

"Waltz with Bashir" (2008)

directed by Ari Folman himself is at the center of this animated film he created, which pulsatingly presents his traumatized soul from his time as a soldier in the First Lebanon War.

The controversial film won the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and even topped the five nominees in the foreign film category at the Oscars.

Although he did not win the glittering award, he managed to bring to mind a topic that was not commonly talked about in those years.

"Siege" (1969)

This wonderful and difficult film came out only two years after the Six Day War, and even though Israel's chest was on top when it ended, "Siege" tries to present a side that was not at all common in those days: dealing with bereavement.

Gila Almagor plays Tamar, a widow whose husband was killed in the war.

She is forced to "play" the role of the widow in front of her surroundings - until she decides to rebel against conventions.

Almagor, who co-wrote the screenplay with Dan Ben-Amotz, is sticking his teeth into this difficult role in a phenomenal way.

She has performed a variety of excellent roles throughout her long career, but it is certainly one of her highlights.

"Lebanon" (2009)

Director Shmulik Maoz brought to Israel one of the greatest cinematic achievements she has ever known - winning the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival.

It happened with the movie "Lebanon", which was his debut movie.

Similar to "Waltz with Bashir", Maoz also chose to focus on his personal experience in the First Lebanon War, but unlike Pullman - he shot the film with flesh-and-blood actors.

The film follows a tank crew sent into the field, and the vast majority of it is filmed inside the tank, which creates a sense of claustrophobia among viewers.

This cinematic expression allows a glimpse into the soldiers' reactions during battle, including moments of stagnation that make it difficult for them to function.

The film stars actors such as Michael Moshonov, Oshri Cohen, Zohar Strauss and Yoav Donat - who plays the character of Maoz himself, the gunner on the team.

"Beaufort" (2007)

In one of the highlights of Israeli cinema, director Yosef Cedar created an amazing adaptation of Ron Leshem's book, "If There is a Paradise", which follows the IDF's last months at the Beaufort outpost before evacuating in 2000, upon leaving Lebanon

. The film deals with the daily routine of the soldiers at the outpost, boredom, mental conversations and conversations about the future - for some of which will not come at all.

"Individual Stealth" (2010)

Dover Kosashvili's film is an adaptation of a book by Joshua Kenez, which follows soldiers in training in 1956.

Oz Zehavi, even before he broke out in "Asfur", plays the character of the poisoned soldier.

With him in the impressive cast are also Michael Aloni and Or Ben Melech.

The book, and the film that follows it, present the grouping of exiles that the State of Israel was in its early years, and deals with, among other things, vulnerable and non-heroic masculinity, in contrast to how IDF soldiers were perceived at the time.
