Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is back.
Also known as Tom Cruise.
In mid-April, he was already looking forward to the "Top Gun" sequel on Twitter.
San Diego, California
The film premiere was duly invited to a US Marines aircraft carrier.
The star himself didn't fly in a fighter jet, but did fly in a helicopter.
And this time another pilot did the skilful landing, Cruise was able to concentrate fully on his comeback.
And here he is again, after a few years of a corona-related break and more than 35 years after he first landed a blockbuster with »Top Gun«.
An encounter with old fans - and an apparently not aged Hollywood star.
Tom Cruise, actor
»Finally seeing faces again, humanity has us again.
It is an honor for me to be here.«
In 1986 the first »Top Gun« hit the cinemas.
The story of two fighter pilots being trained at the US Navy's elite academy has grossed more than $350 million worldwide.
The bar for success has been set high for the new »Maverick«.
The actor, known for being a perfectionist, had equally high expectations for the production.
Tom Cruise, actor
“It was really intimidating to do part two, believe me.
But it was artistically fascinating.
We had to constantly consider what could work and how, that was really interesting.
It was a challenge – and I like challenges.«
Glen Powell, actor
“Tom Cruise started a flight school, and so we learned to fly from the Maverick himself. We flew four different types of aircraft to increase our G-tolerance and understand the manoeuvres.
In the end, when we were in the F18 and being filmed, we all ended up looking like fighter pilots.«
The long-awaited sequel with a new crew will hit theaters on May 26th.
