The Cambridges are reportedly planning to move into the historic residence soon, with their children, to be closer to Queen Elizabeth II.

The Cambridges may soon be living in a historic home.

Built in 1831 by King William IV for his wife, Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, who inspired its name, Adelaide Cottage is a property located to the east of Windsor Castle, within the royal grounds of Home Park, in Berkshire County.

In the past, it was used to accommodate friends and relatives of Queen Elizabeth II free of charge.

Today, it would be the future home of Kate Middleton, Prince William, and their three children, George, 8, Charlotte, 7, and Louis, 4.

After hesitating between several properties also located on the Windsor estate, the princely couple would have opted for Adelaide Cottage, “the best and only option”: the house was renovated in 2015 and is close to several schools,

A house steeped in history

It was the English architect Jeffry Wyatville who supervised the construction of the 2,500 m2 residence, described at the time as "of modest elegance".

In addition to the main entrance facing south, on which is inscribed the date of its construction, it has seven entrances so that the owners can also enter incognito.

To the north, two large rooms open onto the garden, one of which is octagonal, lined with trellis-like motifs.

As for the master bedroom, it is famous for its ceiling decorated with paintings of golden dolphins and its decoration made of objects from the Royal George, a Royal Navy yacht that sailed in the 19th century.

Also in the residence is a marble fireplace in the Greco-Egyptian style.

It is accompanied by an outbuilding, Adelaide Lodge.

A home base for the royal family

Since its construction, many members of the royal family have passed through Adelaide Cottage, from Queen Victoria, who liked to take tea there, to Princess Margaret's lover, Captain Peter Townsend, who lived there from 1944 to 1945.

Finally, it is Simon Rhodes, the son of Margaret Rhodes, a first cousin of the monarch, who is the last to have put down his suitcases.

Kate Middleton, Prince William, and their three children may be the next to be able to create new memories in this house which is already full of them.

At the moment they live between Anmer Hall on the royal Sandringham estate and Kensington Palace in west London.
