Spring lures you into the garden, and there are various jobs to be done.

But you should avoid mowing the yard in May.

Why?

Read that here.

When it finally gets warm and sunny again, you really feel like working in the garden, planting beds, trimming trees and hedges and getting everything ready for the season.

Please note, however, that some gardening work is only permitted at certain times, for example for reasons of noise protection or because it would otherwise endanger animals.

But what about

mowing the lawn

?

You should generally leave such noisy gardening work on Sundays and public holidays - because violations can result in fines of up to 50,000 euros.

But there is another reason, especially in May, why you should not mow your lawn – not even during the week.

Mowing the lawn is a tiresome task for garden owners.

Just leave it at that in May.

No Mow May: Mow-free May as a campaign against insect mortality

A closely clipped lawn is a beautiful sight for humans, but does little for wildlife.

Insects in particular depend on lush

meadows with wild herbs and wild flowers

to nest and find food there.

That's why the " No Mow May

" campaign came from Great Britain

, which means that no garden owner starts the lawn mower in May.

In this way, many

insect species such as bees and butterflies are supported

and can reproduce.

Insect mortality is a major problem worldwide.

More than 85 percent of all plant species depend on pollination.

If there are fewer and fewer insects as pollinators, we will have problems with food production.

Against insect mortality: let the lawn grow in May for the environment

So if you want to do something good for nature conservation, you should also join the "

mow-free May

" - and simply do nothing.

According to dpa, Bettina de la Chevallerie, Managing Director of the German Horticultural Society, reports that "the proportion of nectar-rich flowers increases tenfold if you leave the lawnmower standing more often." If you don't mow your lawn, plants can spread, that have high ecological value for insects, for example

daisies, clover, dandelions and cowslips

.

Leave the wild herbs, which are often unfairly frowned upon as weeds, more often and do something good for nature.

The entire garden doesn't have to be rampant, a "wild corner" helps the insects.

How often should you mow lawns?

A flower meadow looks forward to a fresh cut two to three times a year.

Flower herb lawns should be mowed four to six times a year.

By the way: If your problem with the lawn is not that you have to mow, but that it is growing poorly even though you fertilize and water it regularly,

compacted soil

could be to  blame.

In this case, sand helps the grass to sprout vigorously again.
