(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 05 - On May 15, Italy will run out of resources and natural services available for this year, a couple of days later than last year.

This is what emerges from the table of the Global Footprint Network, an international research organization that measures the "overshoot day", the ecological footprint of countries or the demand for resources with respect to their ability to regenerate.

According to the calculations of the National Footprint and Biocapacity Accounts, Italy would need 2.7 Earths compared to 5.1 for the United States, 4.5 for Australia and 3.4 for Russia, while according to another calculation, Italy would need 5.3Italie to meet the demand for nature of its residents, placing itself in second place after Japan with 7.9.

May 2022 is the month with the largest number of countries in "overshoot day", so they go into debt with the Earth in the following year: there are 28, or 29 if the European Union as a whole is included.

The Earth overshoot day 2021 was July 29 and we will have to wait until June 5, that is the World Environment Day, to know the Earth overshoot day 2022.

According to the calculations, humanity is "using nature 1.75 times faster than the biocapacity of our planet can regenerate" which is equivalent to "using the resources of 1.75 Earth".

The ecological footprint is among the most complete indicators available today for accounting of biological resources, it reorganizes the organization, and adds up all the competing demands of people for biologically productive areas: food, wood, fiber, carbon sequestration and infrastructure arrangement.

Currently, carbon emissions from fossil fuels make up 61% of humanity's Ecological Footprint.
