In May, more sensitive plants can finally be planted outdoors: not only flowers, but also vegetables such as beans and radishes.

Munich – May is probably the most awaited month in the garden year.

Because with the ice saints in mid-May, the danger of late frosts, which could endanger your precious plants, also disappears.

Now you can let off steam in the garden bed without fear of (frost) losses.

The garden month of May marks a new beginning for gardeners: they can sow new flowers, but also fruit and vegetables as they please, because the soil temperature is already around ten degrees Celsius after the ice saints, even at night.

You can sow the following plants directly into the ground:

  • Marigolds (Calendula officinalis): The beautiful flowers of the daisy family are a classic in many gardens.

With their bright yellow to orange flowers, they inspire people and insects alike.

If you sow the marigolds in rows from mid-May, you can expect the first blooms from August.

The marigold is also used in naturopathy.

  • Runner beans: It is important that the beans are sown about five centimeters deep as soon as the soil is constantly warmer than ten degrees Celsius.

So that beans germinate faster, you can soak them in water for a day before sowing.

You should still water the seed.

Note that pole beans, unlike bush beans, require a trellis.

They are ready for harvest about two to three months after sowing.

  • Pumpkin: The fall hit from the same plant family needs one thing above all: lots of space.

Because the tendrils of the pumpkin plants reach a considerable length.

Do not sow the seeds too deep and keep them at least a meter apart.

A humus soil is also necessary for the pumpkin.

  • Sweetcorn: Allow the seeds to swell and sow the corn in at least double rows so that the flowers can later pollinate each other.

If you want to speed up the germination process, a film cover is a good idea.

Sow in May: These plants can also go outside

Ideally, you should have grown tomatoes and aubergines indoors by May so that the young plants can be planted outdoors from May.

Broccoli, zucchini and leeks also benefit from pre-cultivation in a warm environment.
