Tax return for 2021: What applies to the solidarity surcharge?

At the end of 2019, the Bundestag passed the law on the

"reduction of the 1995 solidarity surcharge"

.

This means that the solidarity surcharge will no longer apply to the vast majority of taxpayers from 2021 - an estimated 90 percent.

According to the consumer advice center, the annual exemption limit for standard income tax has been increased from EUR 944 (or EUR 1,944 for joint assessment) to EUR 16,956 (or EUR 33,912 for joint assessment).

According to the report, there is also the so-called

mitigation zone

for higher earners.

You can read here whether you meet the requirements for the basic pension.

mitigation zone

According to the report, the mitigation zone is intended to prevent the full solidarity surcharge being incurred for people whose income tax liability is only slightly above the exemption limit – for example by a few euros.

Within the mitigation zone between 16,956 and 31,528 euros in wage or income tax, the solidarity surcharge to be paid increases only gradually to 5.5 percent.
