Diesel and petrol will soon become cheaper.

The tank discount is part of the relief package that was decided because of the extremely high energy prices.

Motorists, for example, had to pay well over 2 euros per liter for petrol and diesel at times.

The federal government wants to cushion the costs for consumers with a relief package.

With a view to the fuel prices at the gas stations, many are now asking themselves: When will the tank discount, which makes refueling cheaper, come out?

The lowering of the energy tax on fuels is just one element of the relief package that the federal government made up of SPD, Greens and FDP presented on March 24, 2022.

But it is a central point not only for many commuters, but also for the economy.

Truck drivers protested against the high prices at the gas stations, while freight forwarders and logisticians have also sounded the alarm.

The fact is that taxes account for a surprisingly high proportion of the price of petrol.

The energy tax on fuels is to be reduced to the European minimum for a limited period of three months.

That amounts to 30 cents per liter for petrol and 14 cents per liter for diesel, Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) calculated.

But when does the tank discount apply?

When will the liter costs for petrol and diesel fall well below 2 euros again?

After motorists had waited a long time for a specific date, the Federal Ministry of Finance has now named a period for the temporary reduction in energy tax: It will come into force from June 1st and last until August 31st, according to a draft amendment to the Energy Tax Act .

However, it may still be a few days after June 1st before fuel prices actually drop, as wa.de reports.

This applies to all components of the 2022 relief package:

• 300 euros energy price flat rate for all employees subject to income tax

• 100 euros one-time bonus for families with children (per child)

• 100 euros for welfare recipients

• Fuel tax reduction

• 9-euro monthly ticket for public transport

Consumers in Germany will therefore have to be patient until petrol prices at filling stations drop again - and hopefully also noticeably, because there is at least the risk that the tax relief will not reach car owners - but will benefit mineral oil companies.

In view of the high fuel prices, motorists are flirting with the cheaper E10.
