Since the war in Ukraine, sunflower oil has been scarce in German supermarkets - a Lidl branch in Schleswig-Holstein now only sells the product to adults.

Norderstedt – We already know empty supermarket shelves and hamster purchases after two years of the pandemic.

First it was the toilet paper, then the quick tests – sunflower oil is currently in short supply due to the Ukraine conflict.

Ukraine is one of the world's largest producers of the product.

Cooking oil scarce: Aldi, Rewe and Lidl appeal to their customers not to hamster

Supermarkets are looking for strategies to get a grip on people's buying behavior.

Aldi, for example, appealed to its customers with notes on the cooking oil shelf to only buy oil if it is needed, not just because everyone is doing it.

The dynamic between real shortages and private cellars stuffed full of toilet paper, flour and oil can apparently not be brought under control by either supermarket chains or the authorities.

Lidl only sells sunflower oil to adults - and then rows back

An attempt by the supermarket chain Lidl from Norderstedt in Schleswig-Holstein to distribute the available sunflower oil as evenly as possible to its customers also backfired.

So that every family really only buys two bottles of oil, the branch introduced an age limit: Sunflower oil was only sold to adults.

It should be avoided that parents send their children ahead to get more oil.

The measure caused outrage on social networks, and the supermarket chain then overturned its measure.

When asked by the

, the group let it be known that the misunderstanding had been dealt with immediately.

"We ask our customers for their understanding and would like to apologize for any inconvenience."
