A balding man grew hair after he stopped washing (@_nickcoetzee)

A balding man claims to have stopped washing his hair and soon he grew back.

He now advocates the #nopoommovement movement, in which many supporters believe that stopping the use of shampoo helps to grow thicker and healthier hair.

Nick Coatzee turned to Tiktok to share his story.

He said that already in his days as a university student he began to experience what millions of men are afraid of: hair loss.

According to him, one day about 6 years ago he decided to stop using shampoo and let the natural oils of the hair do their job.

He recalled: "It got to the point where lumps of hair started falling out on my clothes every day. I would take another shirt to class because I knew my clothes would be covered in hair by the end of class."

Nick feared that his hair loss had worsened due to all the chemicals in the shampoo and conditioner and stopped washing.

Soon, he claims, he was able to restore his receding hairline and prevent further hair loss: "Surprisingly my hair has become much healthier, and now I have discovered that there is a whole movement around it, it is called 'nopoomovement'."

The hashtag #nopoomethod has millions of views on Tiktok, with more and more people admitting that they have stopped using soaps for their hair.

Like Nick, believers in the "no poo" movement (bad name) believe that hair products are, in fact, a scam.

The trend has gained popularity in recent years also in light of the awareness of the environmental impact of shampoo bottles and the chemicals they contain.

Also, some people have stopped washing their hair to save money or because they just believe that their hair is healthier with regular rinsing with water.

Nick added: "You might think that if you stop washing your hair, it will be oily, and that's what really happens for two or three weeks. But after that your natural oils come back, the same oils you removed with all the harsh chemicals. That way your hair can be very healthy "Without having to wash it anymore."

Nick's video garnered more than half a million views and many in the comments were curious about the #nopoo trend.

One viewer wrote: "100 percent true. I haven't washed my hair in two years for the same reason!".

Another wrote: "Maybe I should try it. I did not fall out in lumps but my hair receded on the sides at the top."

Another viewer wrote: "I tried for four weeks not to wash. The hair became so oily and greasy that I started cooking fries with this **."

Another unenthusiastic viewer wrote: "I was sitting behind a schoolgirl who never washed her hair. I still remember the smell, 20 years later."

Is this scientifically correct?

So does not overlapping the hair really help its growth?

Nikita Mehta, founder of the Ayurvedic hair brand Fable & Mane, claims that reduced overlap does help health and hair growth, but she is a little reluctant: "Dry hair should not remove natural oils as often as other types of hair, and reducing its overlap allows the scalp to heal itself. "Natural scalp oils provide protection because they are a natural conditioner. If you overlap every day, you are likely to remove the oil from the scalp and without it your hair will become drier."

She says you can lower the frequency of overlaps and examine how the hair responds to it: "The frequency of the overlap varies depending on your hair type. I would suggest gently reducing the overlap days to twice a week and see how your hair adapts to it."

Hair and scalp specialist Anbel Kingsley, brand president and consulting trichologist at Philip Kingsley, completely refutes the theory that stopping overlap helps hair growth.

She told refinery29: "Stopping the overlap will not affect the hair growth cycle."

Worse, Kingsley argues that avoiding the use of regular shampoo can do more harm than good: "Too dirty a scalp can contain bacteria, leading to more serious scalp problems. People often avoid covering their hair for fear of hair loss and assume a lower frequency of hair loss. That, again, is not true. "

Kingsley adds that it is normal to lose about 80-100 hairs a day: "If you leave a two-day, three or four-day interval between overlaps, you will see an accumulation of hair loss, but these hairs are ready for hair loss. The action of the shampoo will not increase the amount of hair you lose. ".

Hair guru Zoe Irwin, ambassador of the ghd brand UK, added: "To the best of my knowledge, dirty hair does not grow faster. It is important to wash the scalp because dead skin cells accumulate there and can restrict hair follicles. The shampoo action removes this dead skin."
