The next baking project is coming up and you don't have any baking powder in the house?

Maybe you have one of these ingredients that you can use to replace baking powder.

Baking powder allows dough to rise well and makes cakes*, biscuits and co. airy and fluffy.

But what if the recipe calls for baking powder and you just don't have any?

You can

substitute baking powder

if you find any of these ingredients in your kitchen.

1. Baking soda as a substitute for baking powder

Baking soda is the easiest substitute for baking powder.

The substance, whose full name is sodium bicarbonate, makes up the majority of the baking powder anyway.

However, you still need

to add acid during baking for baking

soda to have its full effect.

Suitable are: buttermilk, lemon juice, quark, fruit or some vinegar.

Per tsp baking powder:

0.5 to 0.75 tsp baking soda and some acid

Disadvantage:

too much baking soda tastes bitter

2. Yeast as a substitute for baking powder

Of course, yeast is also a first-choice leavening agent, whether fresh or as dry yeast.

It is particularly suitable for doughs that are similar in consistency and type to bread.

It doesn't matter whether the dough is sweet or savory.

You can also use yeast as a substitute for

baking powder

for classic sponge cakes , but the consistency will then change.

You have neither nor at hand?

* reveals which alternatives can still be used for yeast and baking powder.

Per 500 g flour:

0.5 to 1 cube of yeast (the greasy dough, the more yeast)

per packet of baking powder:

0.5 cube of fresh yeast, 1 packet of dry yeast

Disadvantage:

Yeast tastes distinctly

With these tips, that will never happen to you again

3. Eggs as a substitute for baking powder

If the basic recipe includes eggs, you can

substitute the baking powder with a little prep

.

Separate the eggs carefully.

Then process the egg yolk by whipping it with the sugar contained in the recipe until creamy.

Then beat the egg whites separately.

Then carefully fold in the firm egg white and bring a lot of airiness into the dough, even without baking powder.

4. Alcohol as a substitute for baking soda

Rum, cognac or brandy are also suitable

substitutes if you don't have baking powder in the house

and don't have children eating with you.

The taste of the alcohol will dissipate as it bakes.

Per tsp baking powder:

2 tbsp high-proof alcohol

5. Sparkling mineral water as a substitute for baking soda

Many hobby cooks and bakers use sparkling mineral water in the kitchen.

The water is usually used for scrambled eggs or pancakes.

But sparkling water also does a decent job when baking.

However, it is only suitable for doughs that contain a lot of liquid.

But don't expect miracles, the mineral water can't quite keep up with baking soda, even if it bubbles strongly.

Disadvantage:

Only suitable for pancakes, sponge cakes or waffle batter
