The tragic toll of a revolt that broke out last night in the regional prison of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas in Ecuador has risen to 43 dead inmates.
This was reported by the Ecuador Public Prosecutor's Office on Twitter.
"Following a riot at the CRS (Center for Social Rehabilitation) Bellavista in Santo Domingo, the prosecutor and the police collect clues and receive versions on the spot. So far there are 43 deceased inmates (in update)", writes the prosecutor on the social network.

revealed that as many as 220 detainees had escaped during the incident and that the police had recaptured 112. The government of President Guillermo Lasso had confirmed earlier today that 20 people had died following the uprising in the province of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, but the prosecutor later updated the budget to 43. The head of state, just returned from a trip to Israel, expressed pain over the incident, arguing that it was the consequence of persistent "gang violence".
The Ecuadorian prison climate has become hot since last year, and in repeated incidents between groups of prisoners from February 2021 to the present at least 350 people have died in different prisons.
