When young people decide to do an apprenticeship, the salary is a decisive factor.
In these professions they can earn the most.
Employers and trade unions determine how much trainees earn in Germany.
The new Vocational Training Act (BBiG) of January 2020 also introduced a
minimum wage for trainees
, provided the employer is not subject to a collective agreement.
The minimum salary per month in the first year of apprenticeship has been 550 euros gross since 2021 and increases by a certain percentage in the following years of apprenticeship.
But: If there is a
collective agreement
is given, this has priority, even if the remuneration is then lower than the minimum wage for trainees.
That doesn't sound like a lot of salary, which is why it's exciting for prospective trainees to find out how much you can earn in which professions.
Below you will find an overview that shows the sometimes blatant differences in salaries between various training occupations.

Training allowance: Trainees are best paid in these five professions
The data comes from an analysis by the Federal Institute for Vocational Training (BIBB).
173 different professions from different areas such as industry and trade, crafts, liberal professions, public service and agriculture were compared.
The table shows the
monthly gross earnings in selected training occupations
as a nationwide average over all training years.
The wage differences are sometimes enormous, sometimes even within one area.
The professions of carpenter, tiler and bricklayer are among the best-paid apprenticeships on the list.
profession | monthly earnings |
---|---|
carpenter | 1,251 euros |
Tile/slab/mosaic layer | 1,198 euros |
mason | 1,196 euros |
plasterer | 1,190 euros |
road builder | 1,177 euros |

Trainee salaries: The collectively agreed training allowance is the lowest in these five professions
Every second trainee earns more than 1,000 euros a month.
Trainees in trades such as carpenters, glaziers and bakers earn less than 800 euros a month.
On average
, trainees for the professions of hairdresser or orthopedic shoemaker receive the
lowest standard wages .
profession | monthly earnings |
---|---|
interior decorator | 703 euros |
parquet layer | 688 euros |
floor layer | 686 euros |
barber | 650 euros |
orthopedic shoemaker | 637 euros |

Hardly any increase in trainee salaries: many vacant training positions
According to analyzes by the Federal Institute for Vocational Training (BIBB),
63,200 training positions
remained unfilled in 2021 .
Many companies are desperately looking for trainees.
The low salary can also be a reason for the vacancies: the
collectively agreed training
allowances increased by an average of only 2.5 percent in 2021.
As BIBB reports, the annual increase since 2012 has mostly been well over three percent, and in 2019 it was even 5.1 percent.
The BIBB analysts see the reasons for the restrained salary increases in the corona pandemic: wage agreements have been postponed and the focus has been on mitigating the consequences of the economic restrictions.
