Filming was completed in 2020.

Nevertheless, the release of the sequel to "Avatar" was repeatedly postponed - most recently because of the corona pandemic.

Little has gotten through to the plot of the prequel so far.

Now a trailer lasting about one minute gives first impressions from the world of Pandora.

Mini-Spoiler: The exact plot is at best hinted at in the trailer.

So fans may have to wait until the theatrical release in mid-December – but some of the first details are now known.

Which characters can the audience expect?

The plot of "Avatar - The Way of Water" picks up where the first film left off: Native American Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) and Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) raise their family on the planet Pandora and fight new threats to the civilization there.

The trailer shows the blue chief's daughter in the jungle of Pandora.

Sully rides battle-ready across the ocean.

However, the world of Pandora also gets a prominent addition.

Among them is Kate Winslet, with whom director James Cameron last shot his Oscar-winning »Titanic« around 25 years ago.

Winslet mimics the character Ronal in the »Avatar« sequel.

In an interview with US moderator Stephen Colbert, she called her character a "water goddess".

Also new are Michelle Yeoh as scientist Dr.

Karina Mogue and Oona Chaplin as a character named Varang.

What are the Titanic parallels?

»The Way of Water« is not only the title of Cameron's reencounter with water.

The trailer features characters like the Neytiri in a wilderness of sea, islands and coral reefs.

A large part of the action apparently no longer takes place in the rainforest, but under water.

Photos from the shoot showed James Cameron and his crew in scuba gear.

The fact that Cameron brings »Titanic« actress Kate Winslet back to the set should also bring back memories for his fans.

Allegedly, Winslet even broke a record there: According to media reports, she managed to hold her breath for seven minutes and 14 seconds during an underwater shoot – Tom Cruise managed six minutes in “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation”.

What surprises the most?

Actress Sigourney Weaver will be back in the prequel.

In part one she played the scientist Dr.

Grace Augustine.

Shortly before her death, Sully attempts to transfer her soul into her avatar body.

In the original, the attempt seems to fail – but according to media information such as the BBC, the actress had already confirmed: “I will come back.”

Does the trailer convince Avatar fans?

The fact that the trailer hardly shows any action doesn't seem to bother »Avatar« fans so far.

"The pictures are breathtakingly beautiful, razor-sharp," writes a user of the YouTube video.

Others particularly praise the technology on the 3D trailer: "No comparison" to "Doctor Strange", according to one comment.

However, another also notes: "Hopefully it lives up to the standard that was set 13 years ago."

The bar is set high for Dave Cameron: The original production »Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora« (2009) is considered the most financially successful film in history with revenues of over 2.8 billion dollars worldwide.

At $2.2 billion, Titanic is third behind Avengers: Endgame, according to statistics.

After »Avatar: The Way of Water«, further parts are to appear in 2024, 2026 and 2028.
